Honoring Mothers: The History of Mother’s Day and Where to Celebrate in San Joaquin County

Mother’s Day is a special holiday dedicated to honoring mothers and celebrating their love, sacrifice, and hard work. Celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May, the origins of Mother’s Day date back to ancient Greece, where the annual spring festival was dedicated to Rhea, the mother of the gods. The modern Mother’s Day holiday was first celebrated in the United States in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the United States, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring Mother’s Day a national holiday.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Mom this May 14th. Treat your mom to a special Mother’s Day brunch at a local restaurant- but be sure to make reservations in advance as it’s a popular way to give mom the day off! Mother’s Day is the also perfect time to tour a local winery and enjoy a wine tasting at one of Lodi‘s many wineries; some host special events for Mother’s Day. Check the Lodi wine and visitor guide here. Treat mom to a pedicure or a trip to a local boutique or farmer’s market. You can find unique and handmade gifts for your mom, and support local businesses at the same time.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, the most important thing is to spend quality time with your mom and show her how much she means to you. Happy Mother’s Day!
