Meditation 101

Let’s talk meditation. Chances are, when you think of meditation you think yoga retreats, far-off mountaintops, and the notion that it’s simply “not for you.” Well, it’s high time to throw out the stigma that meditation is taboo and start looking at it for what it really is: magic. Okay, maybe not actual magic, but in a realm without happy potions and love spells, it comes pretty close.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is meditation?

Meditation has acquired a large variance of supposed meanings, most of which aren’t actually accurate. Meditation is often thought to be simply relaxing, or zoning out, or letting out “ommmmms” while sitting criss-crossed in a serene setting. In reality, meditation is much more than this- it is the act of becoming thoughtlessly aware. This might seem contradictory, but meditation allows you to both clear and focus your mind, which results in heightened mental clarity and alertness. There are many ways to meditate, and anyone can do it, and most importantly, the benefits are incredible. 

What are the benefits?

Meditation is scientifically proven to be beneficial in nearly every aspect of our health- mind, body, and soul.

How to get meditating:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position (or lie down if you’d prefer).
  2. Close your eyes and begin to breath normally.
  3.  Focus your attention on your breathing. Become of aware of every inhale and exhale. Focus on how your body moves with every breath.

Meditation is simple, but its benefits are incredible. Utilize the hundreds of videos online for guidance or simply take a moment to focus on your breath tonight while lying in bed. However you choose to do it, just get meditating!
